For 50 years, the DuBard School for Language Disorders has brought hope to children with communication disorders and their families. While the DuBard School helps many children each year, others are not so fortunate. With nearly 150 individuals placed on the waiting list for full-time and outclient services, the waiting period often approaches two years.
With today’s volatile economic climate and budgetary cutbacks, the need for support to maintain these services is only matched by the need for expansion. Unfortunately, the demand for services exceeds the personnel and programmatic resources available. Simply put, some children do not receive the help they desperately need to learn, speak, write, read and listen/hear. Furthermore, the need for professionals who have received this specialized training continues to grow, as does the need for the funding and resources necessary to train them.
Funding received from the Mississippi Department of Education barely covers half of our total annual budget, so the DuBard School relies heavily on the generosity of private benefactors and charitable organizations. We are tasked with raising approximately 30-35 percent of our annual cost per child enrolled full time. Contributions to this campaign will galvanize the future and longevity of the DuBard School. Those areas can include, but are not limited to:
- Scholarships – Donors may sponsor a student or teacher. This will provide highly specialized, multisensory speech, language and academic therapy services to students who may not be able to access it otherwise.
- Professional Development – Enhanced outreach and training in the DuBard Association Method® for professionals throughout Mississippi and around the country so that children elsewhere may benefit.
- Research Development – Data from research, which examines the use of the DuBard Association Method® and related topics in various settings, is used to improve instructional practices and for professional presentations and articles for publication. Support of research efforts ensures that the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi will remain a national leader in the arena of phonetic, multisensory, structured language education.
- Operations/Capital Improvements – Office and classroom materials, materials development, program enhancement, equipment upgrades and strengthening of outreach assistance.
The money generated from the campaign's support will ensure that our children receive the skills they need and see that those pursuing training in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, education of the deaf and specialized reading instruction have a place to learn and excel. Help us make the hopes of parents and children struggling to be heard a reality.
