Andrew Slemaker, a Finance major from Columbia, Miss., was the first recipient of the scholarship.
“This scholarship has made a significantly positive impact on Andrew,” said Dr. Lance Nail, former dean of the College of Business at Southern Miss. “After meeting Andrew, I knew he was the exact type of student that Hyler and Cass wanted to support and promote.” Slemaker was admitted into the Business Honors House, received the Mississippi Young Bankers’ Leadership Scholarship as the top Finance junior in the state, and was named a Swayze finalist as one of the top five Finance students in Mississippi.
“This scholarship has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people,” said Slemaker. “I am grateful for the relationships I have been able to form with people like Dr. Nail and Dr. Bracey. They have dedicated much of their time to me and offered valuable advice that will really help me in my future career.” In summer 2012, Slemaker interned in the Accounting department at Sanderson Farms in Laurel, Miss. He graduated from Southern Miss in December 2012.
